MR-2: Pavement Reuse - 4-5 points

Goal

Reuse as much of the existing facility as practical.

Requirements

Maintain at least 80% or 95% of the existing pavement material by estimated volume in the new pavement structure. The “existing pavement material” is defined as all material in the existing pavement structure to include surfacing and base material of the pavement structure that is accessible to automobiles. This includes travelled lanes and shoulders. Other paved structures such as bicycle lanes and paved medians are only counted if they are directly accessible by automobiles and not separated by a physical barrier such as a planting strip, median or curb. Sidewalks, existing subgrade (natural in-situ material) and fill material that is not explicitly part of the pavement structure are excluded. The materials considered can include but are not limited to hot mix asphalt (HMA), portland cement concrete (PCC), unbound granular base material and stabilized base material.

Two points are awarded if at least 80% of the existing pavement structure is reused.

Three points are awarded if at least 95% of the existing pavement structure is reused.

Required Documentation

This credit is satisfied by submitting a calculation that includes (1) the total volume of existing pavement structure, (2) the volume of reused pavement structure, and (3) the percentage of the total volume of existing pavement structure that is reused.  This submission should be made by including this calculation somewhere within the standard set of documents submitted for a project (e.g., plans, specifications, design report).
